TOPIC GUIDES > Spa safety
In Australia more children die from drowning than
from motor vehicle accidents, or any other cause except illness.
Drowning can happen because of environment – the area is not fenced;
because of the age of the child – young children are not aware of risks
and cannot keep themselves safe; or because of inadequate supervision.
Many children drown at home in the family pool.
Some children drown even when there are adults near. It is important to
have swimming pools fenced safely and to supervise young children at all
times when they are near a pool or other water.
General rules for using a
spa pool:
- always keep your head above
water
- spend no longer than 20
minutes in the spa pool at any one time
- always supervise children
using the spa pool
- do not use a spa pool that is
not properly maintained
