EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION

Here are some helpful phone numbers that you can use in emergencies or when you need someone to talk to about an urgent or difficult situation. You will find many other helpful contacts for your local area and specific healthcare needs 0n the Human Services Finder web site (We do not guarantee that the content will be error free or that the site will be accessible at all times. See the HealthySA disclaimer.)

In a life threatening emergency 

  • Dial 000 and ask for the ambulance, fire or police service. You can call this number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 
  • Text call emergency — for TTY or ASCII
    Dial 1800 067 167 for the National Relay Service. If you have an emergency and you need to use the TTY (teletypewriter) or a computer modem to make telephone calls, you can call the National Relay Service to reach emergency services. You can call this number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

All these emergency services operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless we have separately noted their operating hours. Calls to 1800 numbers are free of charge and calls to 13 numbers are at local calls rates, except when you call from a mobile phone where you will pay normal mobile phone rates.

Aboriginal services

  • Aboriginal Sobriety Group Mobile Assistance Patrol (MAP) - 8223 4063 - mobile: 0411 474 368
    The Mobile Assistance Patrol transports people under the influence of alcohol or other drugs to places of safety and support. Service available 7 days a week, 6PM–4AM.
  • Nunga Miminis Shelter - 8223 2200 (phone and TTY)
    Support and emergency accommodation for Aboriginal women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Service available 9AM–5PM Monday–Friday. After hours, call Crisis Care on 13 1611.

 

Alcohol and drugs

  • Al-Anon and Alateen  - 8231 2959
    Support for people affected by the alcohol problems of relatives or friends. 
  • Alcoholics Anonymous  - 8346 3255 
    Counselling and support if you have an alcohol problem. 
  • Alcohol and Drug Information Service - 1300 13 1340 
    Counselling service for people with drug and alcohol problems and their family and friends. 
  • Nar-Anon  - 8272 8228 
    Support for people affected by the drug problems of relatives or friends. 
  • Narcotics Anonymous  - 8231 4233 
    Support group for people with drug problems. 
  • Poisons Information Centre - 13 1126 
    Emergency medical advice on what to do if someone has swallowed or been exposed to a poison, whether by accident or intentionally.

  • Kids Help Line - 1800 551 800 
    Anonymous and confidential telephone counselling for people aged 5–18 years. 
  • Parent Help Line — Child & Youth Health - 1300 364 100 
    Information and support on health, behaviour, development and parenting for parents and carers of 0–25 year olds. 
  • Youth Call - 8277 4400 
    Counselling for young people from 6PM–11PM 7 days a week. 
  • Youth and Parent Services  - 8443 3802 
    Emergency accommodation for young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

    Counselling for women and girls distressed by an unplanned pregnancy, their partners or families.
  • Crisis Care Unit  - 13 1611 
    Counselling and practical help for individuals and families in any type of crisis. Available 4PM–9AM Monday to Friday and 24 hours on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. 
  • Lifeline  - 13 1114 
    Counselling for people with any type of crisis. 
  • Living Hope  - 8277 4033 
    Counselling for people with any type of crisis. Filipino, Greek and Italian interpreters can be arranged.

  • C.A.P.S. — Child Abuse Prevention Services  - 1800 688 009 
    Supportive, non-judgemental counselling for parents and carers who are afraid of hurting a child. 
  • Domestic Violence Helpline  - 1800 800 098 
    Counselling for victims of domestic violence and their concerned friends. Counselling for people who commit domestic violence. 
  • Gambling Helpline - 1800 060 757 
    Counselling, information and referral for people who are concerned about their own, or another person’s gambling. 
  • Mandatory reporting - Crisis Care Unit 13 1611 
    Reporting of suspected child abuse

  • Migrant Women’s Support and Accommodation Service  - 8346 9417 
    Support and emergency accommodation for migrant women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Service available 8.30AM–5.30PM Monday–Friday. After hours, call Crisis Care on 13 1611. 
  • TIS — Translating and Interpreting Service  - 13 1450 
    24 hour interpreting service

    If you need the police to attend a crime or emergency. 
  • Victim Support Service  - 8231 5626 country callers: 1800 182 368  
    Counselling and information for people who have been a victim of crime. 9AM–5PM Monday–Friday. 
  • Yarrow Place Rape and Sexual Assault Service  - 8226 8787 country callers: 1800 817 421  
    Emergency medical and counselling services for people who have been raped or sexually assaulted. Yarrow Place can help you report assault to the police, but you do not have to involve the police.
